My daughter was born with adventure in her heart. She loves the outdoors and is willing to try almost anything. She has a curious nature that comes so natural to her, but is nowhere to be found within me. I would much rather prefer to cuddle up on the couch with a good book, whereas she takes her books outdoors. I’d rather sleep in a comfortable bed with super soft pillows, whereas she grabs a sleeping bag and gets comfy in nature. It’s funny to feel so close to someone, but then feel like you’re total opposites. That’s us. We’re total opposites, but I admire that about us because she pushes the limits and makes me step outside the box.
It’s been her dream to camp for as long as I can remember. She’s begged and pleaded. I’ve always been 100% against it though. Sure, I’ll set up a tent in the fenced in back yard for you. You know, where you’ll be safe and a walk away from the warmth and comfort that our home has to offer. But out in the wild with nature- yeah, that’s not quite my thing.
I finally gave in though. I let her talk me into doing the unthinkable. I went camping! It was worse than I feared it would be. The lack of sleep, the lack of variety in foods, the warmth of the sun blistering my pale skin, the bugs, the sounds, the lack of hot showers, the lack of… home. It was much worse than I had imagined, but it was also much better than I imagined. I went hiking- without the fear of bugs or rashes from only God knows what plant. I went canoeing- something I never in a million years thought I’d do. I cooked food in foil packets and sat around a fire as the moon lit the dark sky without any fear of unknown sounds or what could have been lurking in the dark. I learned to give up all control and just be. Anyone that knows me, knows that that is totally 100% NOT in my nature! I learned to stop and see what was around me without preparing in advance. I learned to let go and let my faith guide me on a journey I was over packed and under prepared for.
It’s a night I’ll never forget and I know my daughter won’t either. She helped push boundaries and set expectations. She taught me to be in the moment. I learned to enjoy life that night- life through the eyes of my daughter.
