How a rescue completed our family + Dog Days Release! {Giveaway}

Rocco

I’ve always loved animals and dreamed that one day I’d own a whole farm full of them or maybe a zoo, who knows. However, that dream changed drastically when I had kids. I went from wanting a house full of animals to wanting a clean house with less fur and mud tracked throughout. I really thought  my family was complete. I had 2 kids, fish, a cat, and a dog. What more did I need?

Turns out, God had other plans for us! We’d been running around trying to find a training collar for Rocco for a few days, but weren’t having much luck. We got up early Saturday morning and decided to make a last  minute trip to our local pet store. The store was busy, but we didn’t plan to be there long considering we only needed 1 item. However, as we were picking out the collar and making sure it was the right size, we heard  an insane amount of barking. As we rounded the corner, we saw so many puppies and dogs in crates. They were all there for an adoption event  from a rescue shelter. I really enjoyed petting the puppies. Puppy breath is my favorite. I couldn’t help but notice this one adorable dog, Xena, sitting off to the side patiently waiting her turn and watching my husband’s every move.

She didn’t bark when all the other dogs would. She wasn’t bouncing all over the place. She was calm, collected, and super patient. She had her eye on the prize and she wasn’t taking her eyes off him. My husband finally made his way over to her and you could see the light in her eyes light up. She enjoyed his tummy rubs and all the attention he was giving her. The undeniable connection was immediate.  She was meant for him.  I was reserved about bringing another dog home. Afterall, Rocco had been the only dog for almost 3 years. He has a tendency to be protective  and I just didn’t know how he’d react. I didn’t want to bring this beautiful dog home only to have to take her back if it didn’t work out.  Before we left we asked a lot of questions and got a business card. I told the owner that we’d think about it and let her know.

Xena

The 45 minute drive home was hard.  We went back and forth for about an hour after we got home and finally decided to go get her.  We arrived back at the pet store with just a few moments left before they were done packing up. I signed the adoption papers as quick as I could and brought Xena home with us.

The first few weeks were rough because Xena, who is over a year old, wasn’t house trained and she had bounced around so much that her stomach was a nervous wreck. We took it slow and I stayed in contact with the rescue owner to learn as much about Xena’s past as I could. Things finally settled down and she realized that we weren’t going to give her back like so many others had. She realized that she finally had a home full of hope and love.

Before meeting Xena, I really thought my family was complete. I didn’t walk into that petstore thinking I’d be bringing a new dog home or even giving hope to a dog that had already been through so much. I didn’t realize that one small decision could save a life and change ours too. I didn’t realize that I had room in my heart to share with another dog. Xena has really taught me a lot and shown me  that sometimes giving someone else a chance can be just as rewarding to you as it is for them. Xena and Rocco are now inseparable and chase each other around all day. It warms my heart to know that Xena now has a safe place to call home with a family that loves her and another pup to play with too!

    We have a two year old Yorkshire terrier named Mia that we rescued. She is so full of life, and wonderment and loves people and life. I love the time I get to spend with her, taking long walks and cuddling on the couch.

    I have two four-legged friends – both cats. They have provided so much love and company – I never feel like I’m alone in an empty house with them here.
