There’s nothing like an upcoming move to make you realize just how much you actually own. Moving can be chaotic, but it can also be a great time to declutter and determine what you can let go of. Afterall, it makes no sense to pack up a junk drawer of items you haven’t even seen in the last 5 years. Besides, if you’re using a local moving company, you’ll pay more to move than you really need to.
Prepare and Give Yourself Time
Begin this process as soon as you can so that you don’t stress yourself out or get overwhelmed with the move. Give your self a few hours each day so that you can go through things in a timely manner.
Go Room By Room
It can be easy to get excited and bounce from room to room. However, it will be much more organized if you go room by room. This also helps deter the instinct to toss it all in a box and be done. Don’t forget to go through all those papers in your office as well. It can be easy to keep them all packed up and in the filing cabinet, but cleaning it out before the move with save you time and stress down the road.
It’s a good idea to have a bag for items that can be tossed, a bag for items that can be donated, and a box for items to pack for the move. I also recommend having a carry bag for the everyday necessities. As you go through the room, begin sorting each item into the appropriate bag or box.
For Items that you aren’t sure what to do with, ask yourself some questions and be honest about the answer. Is this something that brings you happiness? Is it something you use or wear at least on a bi-weekly basis? Is it something that is taking up space and serves no real purpose? 9 out of 10, if you even get to this stage, it’s a good idea to donate it or toss it. However, it it’s sentimental you may want to hang on to it.
